Stream & Scream: A First Time Look at “Donnie Darko” For Its 25th Anniversary

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 cult classic “Donnie Darko".” I wanted to include this for my Stream & Scream series for a couple reasons: A) it’s a good choice due to its eerie atmosphere and B) I have never seen it. So, since it’s available on Hulu (as of working on this review), I finally decided to check it out and while it’s intriguing and weird at times, it can also be on the confusing side. In 1988, a teenager named Donnie Darko sleepwalks out of his h

Stream & Scream: A Look at the Modern Cult Classic “It Follows”

“It Follows” received acclaim from critics, who praised its originality, direction, cinematography and score. It ultimately grossed $23.3 million worldwide against a $1.3 million budget and has since achieved a cult following, with many critics and moviegoers citing it as a modern horror classic and one of the best horror films of the 2010s. After carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh, for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fa

Dietrich Theater’s Fall Film Festival: “The Last Picture Shows”

For this week’s review slate, I initially intended on checking out two more film festival selections: “The Last Picture Show” and “The Salt Path.” Since I didn’t get a chance to check out the latter film, I will check out “The Salt Path”, along with some other Fall Fest selections I couldn’t get to, eventually once they’re available on streaming. Now, onto the topic of this review - the documentary “The Last Pictures Show.” In this must-see documentary, Rustin Thompson journe

Stream & Scream: A Look at the 2012 Movie “Sinister”

For this week’s Stream & Scream review, I took a recent look at a 2012 horror movie that has been generally well-liked during its initial release and has since cemented its reputation as a massive fan favorite within the horror community. While initial responses were somewhat split between casual viewers and fans of the horror genre, it has developed a cult following. The horror movie I’m talking about this week is the 2012 movie “Sinister.” True-crime writer Ellison Oswald i

“Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” A Profound, Captivating Documentary

On October 3, the Dietrich Theater will be having a special free showing of the documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.” So, to coincide with this special event, I wanted to take a look at the documentary. A short kid from a Canadian army base becomes the international pop culture darling of the 1980s, only to find the course of his life altered by a stunning diagnosis. The actor who is an incurable optimist is forced to confront an incurable disease. “Still: A Michael J.

Dietrich Theater’s Fall Film Festival: “Elijah Peel”

For this week’s review slate, I was able to take a look at two Fall Film Festival selections at the Dietrich Theater. The topic of this festival review is for the indie film “Elijah Peel.” The film follows a stadium-filling rock star whose life of fame and addiction comes to a sudden halt after a heart attack nearly costs him everything. During his recovery, Elijah encounters a remarkable young girl whose unwavering faith, radiant spirit, and wisdom beyond her years begin to

Dietrich Theater’s Fall Film Festival: “Tony”

In this origin story of a voice that defined a generation, 19 year old Anthony Bourdain stumbles into the chaotic work of a Cape Cod restaurant kitchen, setting off a summer that will shape the course of his life. After I first saw the trailers for “Tony,” I automatically put this on my must-see list. Once I saw that the Dietrich Theater added this film to their festival line up, I knew that I had to add it to this week’s review slate! And, after finally checking out the fil

Latest “Resident Evil” Re-invention Delivers Plenty of Scares

The “Resident Evil” movie franchise has had its ups and downs over the years. While critics have mainly panned the movies, eager fans have turned them into huge successes at the box office. In 2021, the franchise hit a rough patch with the movie reboot “Welcome to Raccoon City” (which I thought was OK) and then the Netflix 2022 series that was cancelled after a single season. Now, the franchise is back in a brand new way and fans of both the video game franchise and the horro

Stream & Scream: A Look at “The Cabin in the Woods” (WARNING - review contains spoilers)

I initially planned on starting my annual Halloween review series with the first edition of October. But, since I really love the spooky season so much, I wanted to work on a review for this edition and for the Sept. 30 edition before I go full steam ahead with the series. Make sure to keep on checking my Wyoming County Press Examiner reviews page on Facebook to see what I have planned for this series. I already have some things already planned and will include a few selectio

Rewind Back to 1996: A Look Back at “Mars Attacks” (30th anniversary)

The Tim Burton-directed movie “Mars Attacks” was released theatrically on December 13, 1996 to very mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its comedic satire of 1950s sci-fi B movies, but criticisms for its dark humor. The movie grossed approximately $101 million in total box office, which was seen as a box office flop (due to its $80 to 100 million budget). A fleet of Martian spacecraft surrounds the world’s major cities and all of humanity waits to see if the extraterr

Rewind Back to 2011: A Look at “Real Steel” (15th anniversary)

For this review for my ongoing Rewind Series, I wanted to take a look at a movie released in 2011 that did alright during its domestic theatrical run (yet made a lot of money internationally) and eventually becoming a modern cult classic. The subject of this review - the 2011 movie “Real Steel.” Charlie Kenton used to be a prizefighter but lost his chance to win a title when heavy, towering robots took over the boxing ring. Now working as a small-time promoter, Charlie pieces

Eager Fans Won’t Be Disappointed With This Long-Awaited Magical Sequel

When “Practical Magic” was initially released in 1998 it ended up being a box office disappointment and received mixed to negative reviews. However, in the decades since, it has undergone a massive critical reappraisal and developed a massive, passionate and enduring fanbase. Now, years later, the Owens sisters are back on the big screen! Despite believing the deadly Owens family love curse was broken, Sally suffers another tragedy when her second husband dies. “Runner”: A Fast-Paced, Adrenaline-Pumping Movie That’s Not To Be Missed

A former soldier is thrown into a brutal race against time when a critical medical delivery makes him and his unlikely partner the targets of a ruthless cartel. As a mission spirals into a deadly manhunt, every detour, delay and bullet pushes them closer to failure. With betrayal closing in from every side, they must survive the chase and deliver their cargo to save the life of a little girl. Before getting to my thoughts of the action-comedy “Runner,” I’ll just say that I am

Back to 1991: A Look at “The Last Boy Scout” (35th anniversary)

Before getting into this week’s reviews, I fully planned on having my usual five reviews that I usually have for the Examiner! But, due to a few setbacks with my phone being locked out for some reason and then my laptop (which hopefully by the time that this is read, everything is resolved LOL), I trimmed down by slate for this week! I will be checking out the new release “By Any Means” when it’s available on Paramount Plus (and review it then) and decided to wrap up my Franc

In Memory of Dolly Parton: A Look at Her First Film “9 to 5”

It’s still crazy that a couple weeks ago we lost two legends back to back - Tim Curry and Dolly Parton. Since my other review focused on Curry, for this review, I wanted to take a look at Dolly Parton’s first feature-length film “9 to 5.” “9 to 5” is a classic 1980 workplace comedy about three working women who team up to overthrow and get revenge on their sexist, and egotistical boss. The three women bond one evening over drinks and jokingly share elaborate fantasies about h

In Memory of Tim Curry: A Look at the 1980s Cult Classic “Clue”

With the passing of acting legend Tim Curry a couple weeks ago (along with Dolly Parton), I took a look at his filmography to see what I can check out for this week’s review slate. Last Halloween, I checked out one of his most famous films ever, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and will likely check out the 1990 version of “It” in October. So, for this review, I decided to take a look at the 1985 movie “Clue” which became a cult classic after having a disappointing box office

A Look Back at “Remember the Titans”

With the high school football season starting up and also with the recent passing of actress Hayden Panettiere (who I actually forgot was in this film), I decided to revisit the 2000 film “Remember the Titans.” The 2000 film wasn’t particularly well-received at the time of its initial release; it’s now considered to be one of the greatest football films of all time. In Virginia, high school football is a way of life, an institution revered, each game celebrated more lavishly

“Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” A Rock Solid High-Octane Flick from Guy Ritchie

Based on the 2014 book “Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII” by Damien Lewis, the 2024 Guy Ritchie directed movie “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” received generally positive reviews, but ended up being a box office bomb - though it later found strong success on digital/streaming platforms. Franchise Flashback: “Terminator: Genisys”

For last week’s review slate, I checked out “Terminator: Salvation” for the first time and it was an OK watch. So now, since I’m finally near the end of the “Terminator” franchise, I’m going to be talking about “Terminator: Genisys,” which despite some decent action sequences, ended up being really confusing at times. When John Connor, leader of the human resistance against Skynet, sends Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect his mother, Sarah, from a Terminator assassin, an unex
