‘Banshees of Inisherin’ a heartfelt drama

Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ follows lifelong friends Padraic and Colm, who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship.

A stunned Padraic, aided by his sister Siobhan and troubled young islander Dominic, endeavors to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer.

But Padraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.

‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is an extraordinary little film from acclaimed filmmaker Martin McDonagh that delivers amazing performances and some great cinematography.

Colin Farrell and Brendon Gleeson give outstanding performances that should be considered when the awards season approaches. Both of these highly-regarded actors have great on-screen chemistry together, and just like a previous film they collaborated on, ‘In Bruges,’ these amazing actors work extremely well together. And, I can’t wait for the actors and McDonagh to collaborate once more.

‘Banshees’ also has some really dark humor that can make you chuckle in some spots. In between the humor, the film also features some really thought-provoking moments. In some parts of the film, you begin to feel for Farrell’s character as he figures out why Colm unexpectedly ended their long friendship. And, you can also feel the loneliness that Padraic feels throughout the course of the film.

The film is also beautifully shot and the filmmakers did a remarkable job recreating the film’s time period of 1920s Ireland. The ending of the film can be both moving and slightly shocking at the same time.

So, make sure to come on down to the Dietrich and check out this beautifully acted film. With amazing cinematography and some great Irish folk music in a couple of scenes, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is an emotional film that’s not to be missed.

‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is written and directed by McDonagh, who also brought us ‘In Bruges,’ ‘Seven Psychopaths’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.’

When the film premiered at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival, it received a 15-minute standing ovation. The film also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and was screened as the opening night film for the 31st Philadelphia Film Festival.

And, just in case anyone is wondering what a “banshee” is. A “banshee” is a female spirit in Irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member, usually by screaming, wailing, shrieking, or keening. The name is connected to the mythologically important tumuli or ‘mounds’ that dot the Irish countryside.

‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is rated R for language throughout, some violent content and brief graphic nudity and has a running time of 104 minutes.
