Plot: Charlie is a troublesome 18-year-old who breaks out of a youth drug treatment clinic. He hitchhiked and is picked up by a man and his sick mother. The man agrees to drop him at a bus station after dropping his mother home. Charlie steals his mother’s oxy and calls Adam to come pick him up. When he returns home to Los Angeles, his parents stage an intervention and force him to go to adult rehab. There, he meets a beautiful but troubled girl, Eva, and is forced to battle with drugs, elusive love and divided parents.

‘Being Charlie’ is an emotional feature film to watch, especially if you either know or have known someone who went through the battle of addiction. There are many moments that are very hard to watch.

The father-son subplot can be rather emotional. The lead character, Charlie, and his father have been estranged and haven’t really been close since his father is running for state governor.

The acting is incredible and all the actors did a great job. The Adam character (Charlie’s best friend) has a few stand-out moments and is there for Nick. The character also goes through a little story arc which I won’t spoil here. There is also a bit of humor scattered throughout and helps break some of the tension and emotion that is in the film.

‘Being Charlie’ will be showing at a special event at the Dietrich Theater on Friday, April 22 at 7 pm!

Here are a couple tidbits for ‘Being Charlie’:

• Rob Reiner said in Marc Maron’s podcast interview that this is the most personal film he has directed about his son, Nick, who battled with drug addiction a decade ago, and his son co-wrote the screenplay.

• The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival on September 14, 2015. The film was released on May 6, 2016.
