The ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ book series has been adapted into a few live action adaptations back in 2010 through 2017 (with the fourth movie having an all new cast). Now, the creator of the book series (Jeff Kinney) and Walt Disney Pictures bring the series back on the screen for the Disney Plus streaming platform - in animated form.
The 2021 ‘Wimpy Kid’ movie is a quick adaptation of the first book. And, when I say quick, I mean quick - the movie is barely an hour long.
It does have some funny moments that kids will really like. And, the animation is decent enough. The animation style and character designs are pretty much the same as what you would see in the books.
Now, I don’t remember the live action series that much. I reviewed the first three for the Examiner when they first came out in theaters and never saw ‘The Long Haul.’ This movie seems like it’s aimed for the younger audience, which is a perfect movie for the younger audience. With it being a short movie, it’s definitely something quick that they can watch and enjoy.
If you enjoyed the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ books, then I am sure you’ll likely enjoy this movie. You can currently stream this new ‘Wimpy Kid’ movie on Disney Plus.
Here are a couple tidbits about the new ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’:
Originally, the creator Jeff Kinney announced a ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ animated series, but for unknown reasons, there was a change of plans to release a new animated movie.
This is the first 20th Century Studios movie to be branded as a Disney movie.
This is the shortest ‘Wimpy Kid’ movie to run at only 58 minutes unlike the original live action movies which were roughly 90 to 100 minutes.
In August 2018, CEO of Fox Stacey Snider stated that an animated project based on the book series was in development, after Kinney decided not to allow anymore live action adaptations after the box office disappointment of ‘The Long Haul.’
On October 23, 2021, ahead of this movie’s release, Jeff Kinney revealed that sequels are already in development. For Disney Plus Day, Kinney revealed that the sequel, based on ‘Rodrick Rules,’ is set to be released on streaming later this year.
Kinney also stated that he intends to adapt all his books into animated features for the Disney Plus streaming platform.
