‘Dune’ a visually captivating sci-fi epic

The world of ‘Dune’ has been around for quite a few decades. American author Frank Herbert first introduced everyone to the ‘Dune’ world in the highly acclaimed novel in 1965 that was beloved by readers and earned several awards and nominations.

In 1984, the beloved novel was finally turned into a big screen adventure. The first film received very mixed reviews and didn’t do well during its initial theatrical run. Over the years, people began to enjoy the film and ultimately became a “cult classic.” Now, a new film adaptation can be seen on the big screen!

In the visually amazing presentation of ‘Dune,’ Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people.

As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who conquer their own fear will survive.

‘Dune’ is an epic adventure that is meant to be seen on the big screen. The sci-fi feature delivers compelling moments and incredible visual effects. In fact, the film’s incredible visuals are probably some of the best visual effects I have seen in many years.

The sci-fi epic also features some gripping action scattered throughout the film. Now, ‘Dune’ doesn’t have a lot of action and most of the film helps build the ‘Dune’ universe with its incredible story.

‘Dune’ does start off a little slow and takes its time introducing us to quite a few characters. But, once this film gets moving, you will really enjoy it. The film does an amazing job building things up and getting viewers familiar with the ‘Dune’ world. And let’s not forget the ending. The ending of the first part of the ‘Dune’ story is so incredible, the cliffhanger that is at the end is the perfect set up for the potential second movie.

Since the novel series consists of many parts, I can see the filmmakers turning this into the next big sci-fi franchise once they get the potential second part going.

‘Dune’ is written by Denis Villeneuve, John Spaights (Passengers) and Eric Roth (A Star Is Born) and also directed by Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049; Arrival; Sicario; Prisoners).

Shortly after the novel’s publication in 1965, ‘Dune’ was identified for potential film prospects, and the rights to adapt the novel to film have been held by several producers since 1971. After numerous attempts by various filmmakers, director David Lynch directed an adaptation in 1984 and the Syfy Channel put together a ‘Dune’ mini-series in 2000.

In November 2016, Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and TV rights for ‘Dune.’ Adapting ‘Dune’ for the big screen has been a lifelong dream of director Denis Villeneuve. He wanted to make a faithful adaptation, so he waited until he’d done sci-fi films ‘Arrival’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ first so that he would have sufficient experience in the genre before working on ‘Dune.’

In February 2021, writer Eric Roth stated he has written a full treatment for a potential sequel. Warner Brothers assured Villeneuve a sequel will be greenlit as long as the film performs well on HBO Max. Legendary Television is also producing a spin-off web series, ‘Dune: The Sisterhood,’ for the HBO Max streaming service. So, get ready for the next lucrative sci-fi franchise to be born.

‘Dune’ has received positive reviews and earned an estimated $40 million domestically during its opening weekend. As of Oct. 24, the sci-fi feature has earned $220.7 million worldwide.

‘Dune’ is rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images and suggestive material and has a running time of 155 minutes.
