'Evil Dead' Delivers Lots of Good Scares and Gore

*** This is my initial Examiner review of the 2013 movie The Evil Dead!***

In the early 1980s, director Sam Raimi directed a relatively low-budget horror flick called "Evil Dead." Even though it wasn't a huge box office success, the horror film became one of the biggest cult classics ever released. It later spawned two sequels, completing the popular "Evil Dead" trilogy.

In the TriStar Pictures/FilmDistrict release of "Evil Dead," a group of five friends are meeting at an old, abandoned cabin in the middle of the woods. The group has been watching over a girl named Mia, a recovering drug addict who is trying to go cold turkey.

While Mia runs off into the woods to try to escape, one of the others finds a hidden book filled with strange writings. After reading the writings, strange things begin to happen. In the forest, an invisible evil presence has found Mia and slowly begins to possess her. Mia tries to tell everyone this, but they ignore her thinking that she is just trying to get attention.

After Mia slowly begins to get worse and becomes fully possessed, she warns the others that they are not going to make it through the night. Now, the rest of the group must find out what's going on and what they have to do to survive the evil that is slowly coming to them.

"Evil Dead" is a horror film that features a lot of good scares and gory moments. The scares in this horror remake are quite effective and can easily make a few viewers jump. The effects in the movie can be quite graphic and might not be for the faint of heart.

One thing that I like about the gory effects is that most of it was not used by CGI like most horror films are doing nowadays. Also, the entire opening sequence of the horror film is quite frightening. I don't want to spoil anything, so you have to go see it for yourself!

Overall, "Evil Dead" is an entertaining horror flick that can easily satisfy any hardcore horror fans out there and fans of the original trilogy. For the fans of the trilogy, you might want to stay after the credits for a surprise cameo from one of the original "Evil Dead" stars who may possibly make a return to the franchise sometime in the near future.

Jane Levy plays Mia, a drug addict who is trying to go cold turkey and eventually becomes possessed by the demon that the mysterious book summons. Levy can currently be seen in the ABC TV series "Suburgatory" and the movie "Fun Size."

Other cast members include: Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) as David, Lou Taylor Pucci (The Music Never Stopped) as Eric, Jessica Lucas (Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore as Natalie. "Evil Dead" is co-written and directed by Fede Alvarez, making his directorial debut.

A remake of "Evil Dead" has been in development for several years. Original "Evil Dead" director Sam Raimi and producer/star Bruce Campbell has been trying for years to come up with a decent story for a remake or sequel, but had trouble coming up with a good idea.

Around early 2011 was when the remake's story quickly began to heat up and come together. Raimi, Campbell and fellow "Evil Dead" producer Robert G. Tapert also returned to produce the remake of "Evil Dead." Right before its initial release, the remake's director stated that due to the positive response of the remake, a sequel is currently underway. UPDATE: Even though a direct sequel to the 2013 remake is currently not in the works, it is rumored that there could be an Evil Dead movie every couple years.

"Evil Dead" is rated R for strong bloody violence and gore, some sexual content and language and has a running time of 91 minutes.
