‘Evil Dead Rise’ Delivers Tense Scares and Terror

The ‘Evil Dead’ franchise started all the way back to 1981 with the first film called ‘The Evil Dead.’ The 1981 film was a small hit, but over time it has become a horror classic. Two sequels were released in 1987 and 1992 - ‘Evil Dead II’ and ‘Army of Darkness’ - which, just like the first film, became cult classics.
After the 2013 soft reboot (which I really enjoyed, yes big horror fan), the franchise eventually had a TV spin-off (Ash vs. Evil Dead) and even comic books. Now, the series is back and fans of the series won’t be disappointed.
In the latest entry of the horror series, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment.
The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book buried deep under Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.
As a big fan of the horror genre, ‘Evil Dead Rise’ had been on my radar since viewing the first trailer awhile back. The latest entry of the series does a great job delivering the scares, and yes, gore (a lot of it).
The scares that are featured in the movie are really insane at times and there are plenty of tense moments scattered throughout. The scares start right from the beginning and they just keep on coming right until the very end. The opening sequence gives the latest movie in the series a truly thrilling start. There is also a scene where you will look at a cheese grater differently. You will just have to see the scene for yourself.
The make up effects that are seen in the movie are really awesome and the bloody moments are great practical effects. Just like the 2013 movie, there are alot of dark/bloody moments. The fifth movie does add a bit of humor here and there that some of the earlier entries of the series are known for.
The performances from the small cast also helped with the movie’s tension. Alyssa Sutherland, who portrays Ellie, the mother of three, does an awesome job where her character becomes possessed. A lot of those scenes and her performance in those scenes can be rather eerie.
Overall, if you really enjoy this horror franchise or just like horror movies in general, come on down and give ‘Evil Dead Rise’ a shot. The fifth entry is really tension-filled and slightly gory. OK, maybe more than slightly.

‘Evil Dead Rise’ is written and directed by Lee Cronin, who also directed the 2019 horror indie ‘The Hole in the Ground.’
‘Evil Dead Rise’ is rated R for strong bloody horror violence and gore, and some language and has a running time of 97 minutes.
