During the fall of 2020, when theaters were slowly still in the process of opening back up, I took a look at the Blumhouse feature 'Freaky.' I liked how they gave the 'Freaky Friday' story a horror-comedy twist. Now, with the Halloween/horror movie season is upon us, I decided to re-watch 'Freaky' for an early Halloween treat.

'Freaky' is a fun little horror-comedy that will really keep you entertained. In between all the comedic moments that are featured, there are quite a few parts that have some decent scares. From beginning to end, this 2020 flick will leave you feeling a little scared at times with its slasher vibes and the very humorous moments that it offers.

Also, the concept of a hometown killer switching bodies with a potential victim is both awesome and very refreshing for the genre. And, as usual, Vince Vaughn shows that he still has what it takes to entertain you! Plus, during the scenes where the Butcher character is supposed to act like Millie, it can be quite hysterical.

'Freaky' is available on the HBO Max streaming platform through the end of the month and also available on various PVOD rental platforms.

Here are a few interesting tidbits for Blumhouse's 'Freaky':

  • Vaughn's fall during the auditorium chase was accidental and not scripted. Vaughn slipped on the fake plant that was knocked over and lost his balance but continued the scene.

  • The original name of the movie was 'Freaky Friday the 13th,' a reference to the various 'Freaky Friday' films and the 'Friday the 13th' series.

  • Landon cited 'Fright Night,' 'The Blob,' 'Scream,' 'Scream 2,' 'Urban Legend,' 'Cherry Falls' and 'Jennifer's Body' as inspirations for the movie.

  • In the opening scene where The Butcher kills his final victim with the spike on the wall, he tilts his head the same way Michael Myers did in 1978s 'Halloween' after stabbing his victim to the wall.

  • Principal photography lasted for 35 days. It began on October 21, 2019, and was completed on December 12, 2019.

  • Had its world premiere at Beyond Fest on October 8, 2020. it was theatrically released on November 13. Made available on PVOD on December 4, HBO on July 27, 2021 and HBO Mac the next day.

  • Grossed $9 million domestic, and $7.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $16.2 million.
