An epic fantasy adventure based on a timeless Arthurian legend, ‘The Green Knight’ tells the tale of Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men.

Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger.

From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table. ‘The Green Knight’ is a bold, fresh take on a popular Arthurian legend. The fantasy adventure delivers incredible visuals and mesmerizing moments that will really surprise you.

Unlike most features based around the legends of King Arthur, this feature film is rather dark and a little strange at times. Actor Dev Patel gives a truly great performance as King Arthur’s nephew, Gawain. I’ve only seen a couple films that the actor has appeared in (Hotel Mumbai, Slumdog Millionaire) and he was really great in those as well. Patel definitely has a great future ahead of him in the indie/art-house industry.

Even though this isn’t your typical action-packed adventure film, ‘Green Knight’ is really character-driven and delivers some moving, dramatic moments. The film can be a little slow building at some parts, but anyone who enjoys films that are based on a King Arthur legend will surely enjoy ‘The Green Knight.’ The cast: Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield; Hotel Mumbai) as Gaiwain; Alicia Vikander (The Glorias; Tomb Raider) as Essel/The Lady; Sarita Choudbury as Mother; Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible — Fallout; Netflix’s The King) as King; Kate Dickie (Prometheus) as Queen; Erin Kellyman (Disney Plus’ Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Winifred; Joel Edgerton (Boy Erased) as The Lord and Ralph Ineson (Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake) as Green Knight.

‘The Green Knight’ is written and directed by David Lowery, who has also directed ‘A Ghost Story,’ ‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,’ ‘The Old Man & the Gun’ and ‘Pete’s Dragon.’

The fantasy medieval feature is based on the 14th Century poem ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.’ It was announced in November 2018 that filmmaker Lowery was working on a re-telling of the 14th Century tale.

Principal photography began in March 2019. Ardmore Studios and Cahir Castle, both located in Tipperary, Ireland, were used as filming locations, as was Charleville Castle in Tullamore, Ireland.

The film has received a lot of acclaim from critics and has earned $6.8 million during its opening weekend.

‘The Green Knight’ is rated R for violence, some sexuality and graphic nudity and has a running time of 130 minutes.
