Filmmaker Guy Ritchie is one of those directors who would always do a great job at keeping his audience entertained. Not counting The Covenant, I have only seen a small handful of his films (the Sherlock Holmes movies; Aladdin; The Gentlemen; Wrath of Man) and I enjoyed them. I still can't believe Guy Ritchie did a Disney movie! Anyway, for this film, Ritchie delivers another great film that, not only delivers some intense action, it also can be really heart-felt.
There are some moments in the first half of the movie that has some really gripping action. In between these moments, we see the lead characters, Master Sgt. John Kinley and Ahmed the interpreter, and you can sense a bit of distrust and intensity during a few of their earlier moments together.
The moment that changes everything is during a weapons raid that involves a major ambush by Taliban forces. During this raid, everyone's gone except for Ahmed and Kinley (who has been severely injured). And in the second half of the movie is where the emotion sets in.
Seeing Ahmed doing all that he can to save Kinley and try to not be noticed by the Taliban who are after them, those scenes can be extremely heart-pounding and harrowing. When you watch those moments, you can see that Ahmed has gained Kinley's trust and will do absolutely anything to make sure Kinley stays alive and comes back safely. The movie does go on an incredibly emotional journey, which leads up to an ending that will really leave your heart pounding and have your eyes glued to the screen.
The Covenant will have its last showing at the Dietrich tomorrow night at 7 pm. If you can't make it, the film is currently available to rent on various PVOD streaming services as an Early Access (including Redbox). Without a doubt, this film is definitely one of the best films of 2023 so far and is an absolute must watch!
