Minions: The Rise of Gru TRIVIA!!!

Those crazy yet entertaining little minions are still showing audiences a good time in town on the big screen with Minions: The Rise of Gru. And here are some fun little tidbits about the latest Illumination spin-off/sequel!!


  • This is the longest-advertised animated film in motion picture history, due to a nearly 2½-year gap between its first trailer and its official release.

  • The first theatrically released sequel to an animated prequel and an animated spin-off.

  • A viral Tiktok trend by Gen-Z viewers made it a meme to dress in suits and attend the film en masse. It was prevalent enough that several cinemas had to ban the teens due to disruptions. As a result PostTrak, reported 34 percent of the opening weekend audience was between ages 13 and 17, an unusually high showing of teenagers for an animated film. The last entry in the franchise, Despicable Me 3 (2017), only had teenagers make up 8 percent of the audience.

  • In January 2017, Universal and Illumination announced the sequel to their animated movie 'Minions.' The movie began production in July 2017.

  • Debuted at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 13, 2022, followed by a premiere on June 25 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in LA.

  • The movie was originally scheduled for general release on July 3, 2020, but due to the pandemic and their incomplete status with Illumination MacGuff's (French animated feature production company owned by Illumination) temporary closure in response to that event, it was pushed back to July 2, 2021, and later to July 1, 2022.

  • 'Minions: The Rise of Gru' is scheduled to stream on Peacock within four months of its theatrical release, as part of an eighteen month deal. The movie would then move to Netflix for ten months, before returning to Peacock for the last four months.

  • As of July 11, the 'Minions' sequel has earned $210 million domestically and $405 million worldwide. Even though a third 'Minions' sequel hasn't been announced yet, a 'Despicable Me 4' will currently slated for a summer 2024 release.
