The “Now You See Me” franchise started in 2013 with the hit movie “Now You See Me” and was followed up in 2016 with “Now You See Me 2.” Though the series as a whole has received mixed critical reception, they have been met with a mainly warm welcome response from audiences. For the most part, I thoroughly enjoy these movies, even though the 2016 sequel seemed to be too convoluted.

A third movie has been in some sort of development stage for almost a decade. And, now the Four Horsemen are back to see if there’s still magic up their sleeves.

In the long-awaited third installment “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” the Four Horsemen return along with a new generation of illusionists performing mind-melding twists, turns, surprises and magic unlike anything ever captured on film as the illusionists try to bring down a worldwide criminal network.

“Now You See Me 3” delivers more intriguing magic and excitement that is actually really exciting. This long-awaited sequel also features a lot of extremely fun moments and even though the plot does have a lot going on like the previous movies, it actually comes together nicely once the movie wraps up.

The third entry of the franchise is a welcome return for this series after a nearly decade long hiatus and provides a highly entertaining sense of escapism. Throughout this third entry, we get awesome magic/illusion sequences that will surely keep you entertained and the numerous twists and turns are really intriguing.

Since this sequel introduces us to a new small group of illusionists, I expected that there would be an old vs. younger kind of competition going on to see who is better. But it’s

actually quite humorous most of the time as they try to show the other what they can actually do. Throughout most of this movie, there are a series of amusing back and forth interactions and intergenerational mentorship themes as the original Horsemen work with the younger trio.

The twists and turns throughout are quite memorable and there are plenty of surprises (including a couple past characters) and plenty of scenes that will easily be meant to misdirect you. The only thing that I will say about the major twist reveal is that it’s not nearly as convoluted as the previous movies and actually catches you off guard in a good way.

We also get to see some truly exciting sequences such as the diamond heist and an F1 car chase towards the conclusion. To create a diversion, one of the new members manages to steal a Formula One car on display and leads the police on an exciting high-stakes chase.

While the plot and the twists and turns weren’t nearly as complex as the previous entries, “Now You See Me 3” is still a worthy sequel. It was great to see the cast again (including the always great Morgan Freeman) and I thoroughly enjoyed the many surprises this movie offers. There’s also a hint of a potential fourth movie so I’m kind of interested to see what they have up their sleeve for a “Now You See Me 4” (which has recently been announced to be in early development).

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg (J. Daniel Atlas); Woody Harrelson (Merritt McKinney); Dave Franco (Jack Wilder); Isla Fisher (Henley Reeves); Justice Smith (Charlie); Dominic Sessa (Bosco); Ariana Greenblatt (June); Rosamund Pike (Veronika Vanderberg); Morgan Freeman (Thaddeus Bradley).

Writer/director: Seth Grahame-Smith (writer) (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice); Michael Lesslie (writer) (Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes); Rhett Reese (writer) (Peacock’s Twisted Metal; Deadpool and Wolverine); Paul Wiernick (writer) (Twisted Metal; Deadpool and Wolverine); Ruben Fleischer (director) (Uncharted; Zombieland: Double Tap; Venom).
