Not long after the initial 'Resident Evil' film franchise wrapped up, a reboot was already announced. And 'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City' was supposed to be close to the video games.
Now, I'm not completely familiar with the video games. But, from what I have read online, even die hard 'Resident Evil' fans had mixed reactions to the latest movie.
The 2021 reboot can be fairly entertaining at times and does have a few scares here and there. It also seemed like at times the filmmakers tried to pack in a lot into a 100 minute movie. I'm sure if I played the video games and understood it more, it would help understand the movie.
Some of the acting definitely needed some work. So, if you have enjoyed the video games and the previous film franchise, there might be a chance that you may enjoy this movie. And, since this didn't really make that much at the box office, I don't think there will be a sequel to 'Welcome to Raccoon City.'
Here are some interesting tidbits for 'Welcome to Raccoon City':
Capcom gave the filmmakers their blueprints to recreate the main halls of the Spencer Mansion and the RPD (police station).
In the beginning of the movie, Jill asks her friends what would be a worse death, swallowed by a giant snake or eaten by a giant white shark. In the first game there is a giant snake and a flooded lab with sharks, both of which can kill you.
The movie never explains why the entrance hall of the police station looks so elaborate with its architecture, and its giant statue in the background. In the games it's explained that the police station was a former art museum.
The movie is based on and inspired by the first two video games.
Pre-production took place in early 2017 while 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter' was still in theaters.
'Welcome to Raccoon City' was released on PVOD on December 21, 2021, and was the top rented film on Vudu during its first weekend.
As of April 23, 2022, it grossed "17 million in the US and Canada, and $24,9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $41.8 million.
Director Johannes Roberts stated that if a sequel were to be developed, he would like to adapt the story from 'Resident Evil: Code Veronica' and then 'Resident Evil 4.'
