Throughout the course of 2022, I managed to check out and review several great films — ranging from first run releases to some film festival selections. Granted, I didn’t get to see every single film as I intended due to a few constraints.

So, without any further ado, let’s get things going and here are my top pics of the year, including some runner ups that ALMOST made the cut!

10. Dog — Two former Army Rangers are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Briggs and Lulu race down the Pacific Coast to get to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time.

9. American Underdog — The story of NFL MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, who went from stocking shelves at a supermarket to becoming an American football star.

8. Scream — 25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quite town of Woodsboro, a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teens to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. ‘Scream VI’ opens in March!!

7. The Banshees of Inisherin — Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.

6. Colewell — For 35 years, Nora has been the postmaster of Colewell, when the USPS decides to close her office, she must choose whether to relocate for a new position or retire in the small town of Colewell.

5. Elvis — The life of American music icon Elvis Presley, from his childhood to becoming a rock and movie star in the 1950s, while maintaining a complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

4. Belfast — A young boy and his working-class family experience the tumultuous late 1960s.

3. The Batman — When a serial killer begins killing political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city’s hidden corruption and question his family’s involvement.

2. Everything, Everywhere All At Once — An aging Chinese immigrant is swept up in an insane adventure, in which she alone can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could’ve led.

And, for the first time ever, I have a tie for the No. 1 position …

Avatar: The Way of Water — Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home.

Top Gun: Maverick — After thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN’s elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.

Here are the films that almost made the cut to the top of the list: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; Uncharted; The Lost City; Sonic the Hedgehog 2; The Bad Guys; Nope; Tragedy of Macbeth; Bullet Train; Where the Crawdads Sing; Violent Night; Devotion; Jurassic World: Dominion; Pearl; The Menu; Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Both The Menu and Wakanda Forever were so close to making it to the top ten!
