‘Suicide Squad’ a Fun, Fast-Paced Riot

In 2016, Warner Bros. made the first attempt of making and releasing a ‘Suicide Squad’ feature. Even though the movie became a decent hit at the box office, the 2016 release received a lot of mixed reactions among critics and fans.

Now, the studio gives the ‘Suicide Squad’ another chance of redemption on the big screen and it’s definitely one of the best comic book movies ever released in the DC franchise.

In the extremely entertaining ‘The Suicide Squad’, the government sends the most dangerous supervillains - Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley Quinn and many others - to the remote, enemy-infused island of Carlo Maltese.

Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave.

‘The Suicide Squad’ is a major, major improvement of the 2016 movie. This adaptation of the comic book series has everything - action, emotion, a tiny bit of blood (ok, maybe more than a tiny bit) and lots of humor.

The action starts at the very beginning and doesn’t really slow down until the movie’s conclusion. All of the action sequences are extremely fun to watch and Harley Quinn’s big action moment (with the song ‘I Ain’t Go Nobody’ playing in the background) is truly the stand-out moment of the movie.

The chemistry of all the characters (including the ones that are very briefly in the movie) is really incredible and most of the characters have their moments to shine. The characters really do bring out the humor and there are quite a few parts in the movie that will really make you burst out with laughter.

So, make sure to come on down to the Dietrich and don’t miss ‘The Suicide Squad.’ The movie does an exceptional job mixing up the great action, the humor and even a couple emotional moments. And, let’s not forget the stand out character of the sort of sequel/sort of reboot - King Shark. You’ll have to see the movie to see why he’s the stand out character.

‘The Suicide Squad’ is written and directed by the talented James Gunn, who has recently directed the first two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies and is gearing up for the third ‘Guardians.’

A ‘Suicide Squad’ follow-up has been in the cards since a little bit before the 2016 movie was released in theaters. Original director David Ayer didn’t return for the next movie due to the studio interference with the first movie. Director James Gunn considered this movie the most fun film he had made, which he attributed to prioritizing creativity over perfectionism, being in the best place mentally and emotionally and having a supportive studio (Warner didn’t interfere with his vision).

Actor Idris Elba was initially hired to replace Will Smith as the Deadshot character, but it was later decided that Elba would play a new character to allow Smith to return in future movies. Gunn took inspiration from John Ostrander’s original 1980s run on the ‘Suicide Squad’ comics, but described his script as more of a sequel in the same spirit as those comics rather than an adaptation.

A spin-off featuring the Peacemaker character will debut on HBO Max in January 2022 and numerous spin-offs (including a potential ‘Suicide Squad 3’) could be in the works.

The super-villain flick received rave reviews from critics and earned an estimated $26.5 million during its opening weekend.

‘The Suicide Squad’ is rated R for strong violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual references, drug use and brief graphic nudity and has a running time of 134 minutes.
