'The Faculty' is a 1998 sci-fi thriller that I have seen numerous times over the years. In fact, for a long time, I owned the VHS copy of the movie. VHS - do you remember those?? LOL. Anyway, let's move on to my quick take on the movie.
This sci-fi thriller has a similar vibe to 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers.' The 'Body Snatcher's is actually mentioned in the movie and sort of involves the plot of the movie. There are quite a few references from other horror films that you can possibly notice if you are a true fan of the horror genre. And, the soundtrack for the movie is simply awesome!!
'The Faculty' also features a great cast and delivers a good amount of thrills and a couple of good laughs. The movie is loads of fun and the visual effects are pretty good. The cast has quite a few notables actors - some before they became famous and some that have appeared in numerous horror movies over time. This should definitely be considered to be a modern classic!
'The Faculty' is available on the HBO Max streaming platform.
Here are a couple little tidbits for 'The Faculty':
The drug test scene is an homage to the blood test in the John Carpenter classic 'The Thing.'
Jon Stewart plays Mr. Furlong in this movie. Actor Edward Furlong plays John Connor in 'T2,' chased by the T-1000, played by Robert Patrick (Coach). And, Jon Stewart's full character name for the movie is Ed Furlong.
The movie opened on 2,365 screens on its opening weekend, debuting at No. 5 in the US, making $11.6 million. It eventually grossed $40.3 million. its debut below commercial expectations has been partly credited to the studio's decision to release it on Christmas. Over the years, the movie has garnered a cult following.
