A few nights ago, I re-watched the 2018 Conjuring spin-off The Nun. Despite being one of the biggest worldwide hits of the entire series, the reviews were severely mixed. When I first watched this movie during its initial release, I thought it was just OK and really cliched at times.
Now when I gave it another look on the Max streaming platform, it was actually the first time in quite a while that I watched it. Even though yea some of the scenes do seem a little on the generic side, this spin-off is really not that bad.
The Nun delivers quite a few jump scares and the gothic feel that the filmmakers did for this spin-off was a nice touch. The gothic atmosphere really helped make the movie look and feel scary.
Sure, there are a few small flaws in this horror flick. But it shouldn't really affect your viewing of this movie. The spin-off can get really scary when it needs to be and the Nun character (named Valek) will eventually be a true horror icon soon enough.
The Nun is currently streaming on the Max streaming service and the sequel is currently showing at the Dietrich through Sept. 28. And, even though both movies are scary, The Nun II is slightly better than this spin-off.
Here are some tidbits for the 2018 Conjuring spin-off The Nun!
Filming took place at the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara, and in Sighisoara, Transylvania, Romania, and also at Mogosoaia Palace, near Bucharest, Romania.
After the "Demon Nun" from The Conjuring 2 (2016) proved to be a popular horror antagonist, a spin-off focusing on the character was green-lit, making her the second character to get her own feature after Annabelle (2014). The Crooked Man, from Conjuring 2, will be the third in The Crooked Man.
While The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring 2 (2016) are based on allegedly true events, this film's story is entirely made up by the film makers.
The highest grossing film from The Conjuring Universe and the lowest rated one (in October 2019).
The film was originally set to hit cinemas in mid-July 2018 but was pushed back closer to Halloween on 7 September, in hopes of doing as successfully at the box office as It (2017) did the previous year, which smashed records and earned more than USD $700 million.
