I'm finally getting close to wrapping up my Transformers re-visit! It's taking longer than I expected with my schedule and what not. After going through the franchise again, I could tell it definitely had numerous ups and downs - which some franchises go through. And, now I made it to the 2017 sequel The Last Knight. After checking out The Last Knight again, I can easily say that it's a good thing they decided to reboot the franchise starting with Bumblebee.
Transformers: The Last Knight may have a couple okay things going on. The British robot, voiced by Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter, steals the show in a few scenes and the action can still be entertaining.
The Last Knight also messes up the franchise's continuity. For example, the 2007 movie stated that it was Bumblebee's first arrival on earth. And in this sequel, it's shown in pictures that he helped fight in World War II. Unless I missed something ... who knows? Even though Revenge of the Fallen can be on the borderline okay/weak side, The Last Knight definitely is the weakest!!
I will be checking out Bumblebee next and along with my updated take, I will also have a ranking of ALL live-action installments, including the recent Rise of the Beasts!
Here are some fun tidbits for Transformers: The Last Knight!
Screenwriter Matt Holloway is a fan of Downton Abbey, and jokingly said that Jim Carter (who played the butler on the show and in the movies) should voice Cogman. He was shocked when Bay got Carter signed on to voice the character.
The original cut of the movie supposedly was much longer and roughly a whole hour's worth of footage was cut for theatrical release.
This is the most expensive movie in the franchise, but also the lowest-grossing of the original series.
Tyrese Gibson was set to return as Epps, but he was unable to appear due to scheduling conflicts with The Fate of the Furious.
Quintessa turns Optimus Prime into her minion. This is an homage to The Transformers: Dark Awakening (1986), where Quintessa reprogrammed Optimus Prime to do their bidding.
The Last Knight grossed $130.1 million in the US and Canada, and $475.3 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $605.4 million. The movie reportedly lost Paramount over $100 million and was deemed a commercial failure due to competition from Despicable Me 2, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, War for the Planet of the Apes and Dunkirk.
