It seems like it’s been an eternity since we’ve seen a Pixar movie on the big screen. The last two Pixar releases, ‘Soul’ and ‘Luca,’ went straight to Disney Plus. ‘Turning Red’ was sooo close to being a theatrical release, until Disney changed their plans a few months ago. Now, you can see the latest Pixar release at the comfort of your own home on Disney Plus.
Disney and Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’ is another enjoyable and funny hit from the beloved animation studio. The new animated feature is a great, little coming of age story with a twist.
Like all Pixar releases, the animation is really incredible. ‘Turning Red’ also features a lot of characters that you will enjoy seeing. This unique animated movie is a story about self control, acceptance and emotions. ‘Turning Red’ surprisingly got some complaints from various parental groups about the movie being a clever way to talk about the topic of puberty.
Despite that, ‘Turning Red’ is a refreshing and even heart-warming story from one of the best animation studios out there. Definitely worth a look when you’re browsing through the Disney Plus streaming platform.
Here are a few interesting tidbits for Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’:
Sandra Oh’s fourth Disney movie, after ‘Raya and the Last Dragon,’ ‘Mulan II’ and ‘The Princess Diaries.’
The third Pixar movie to be released exclusively on Disney Plus after ‘Soul’ and ‘Luca.’
Director Domme Shi first pitched ‘Turning Red’ to Pixar on October 31, 2017. That same year, Pixar hired Chiang to provide scratch vocals (a vocal performance that a performer records to provide a reference track that producers and audio engineers can use as they craft other pieces of a recording) to support the development of the film. Chiang was officially offered the role when recording sessions began.
It was originally scheduled to be theatrically released on March 11, 2022. However, as the Omicron variant cases rose, on January 2, 2022, the decision was made to shift the film from its planned theatrical release to Disney Plus as a Disney Plus Original.
Upon the film’s first screening, critics praised it’s story, voice cast and Shi’s direction.
