Where the Crawdads Sing TRIVIA!!!

The film adaptation of 'Where the Crawdads Sing' is currently showing at the Dietrich and will be showing for an ADDITIONAL week!!! My review for the film will be available in this week's print/online edition of the Examiner and on my site!

So, until my review for the film is available, here are some little tidbits about the film to tide you over until my review is available!!!

• Author Delia Owens can be seen sitting on the front row behind lawyer Tom when Chase's mother is testifying on the stand that Chase never took that shell necklace off.

• The song that Chase sings to Kya in bed is "Long Black Veil," a 1959 Lefty Frizzell folk ballad about a man who refuses to give an alibi when charged for a murder he didn't commit.

• Daisy Edgar-Jones (Kya) auditioned with a self-recorded tape she filmed on the set of her series War of the Worlds (2019).

• Based on the bestselling novel by Delia Owens.

• Crawdads (crayfish) cannot "sing," but when Kya's mother often encouraged her to explore the marsh, she would say, "Go as far as you can–way out yonder where the crawdads sing." When Tate also used the phrase, she asked him the meaning and he replied, "Just means far in the bush where critters are wild, still behaving like critters." Delia Owens was inspired to use the phrase because her own mother had used it when she was a child.

• Principal photography took place from March 30 to June 28, 2021, in New Orleans and Houma, Louisiana.

• As of August 14, 2022, Where the Crawdads Sing has grossed $72.1 million in the United States and Canada, and $14.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $86.9 million.

• Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale. PostTrak reported 87% of audience members gave it a positive score (with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars), with 70% saying they would definitely recommend it.

• The book was selected for Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine Book Club in September 2018 and for Barnes & Noble's Best Books of 2018.

• By December 2019, the book had sold over 4.5 million copies, and it sold more print copies in 2019 than any other adult title, fiction or non-fiction. It was also No. 1 for 2019 on Amazon.com's list of Most Sold Books in fiction.It topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2019 and The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2020.

• In late December 2020, The New York Times listed it as the #6 hardcover bestseller that year. In 2022, Publishers Weekly ranked it the 14th bestselling book of 2021, with sales of 625,599 copies, and as of late February 2022, the book had spent 150 weeks on the best seller list. In April 2022, it was reported that the book had sold 12 million copies. By July 2022, the book had sold over 15 million copies, making it one of the best-selling books of all time.

• Since 'crawdad' is a regional term, it sparked a rise in online queries about the word's meaning.
