In the 2025 release “Drop,” Violet is a widowed mother who goes to an upscale restaurant to meet Henry, her charming date.

However, her pleasant evening soon turns into a living nightmare when she receives phone messages from a mysterious, hooded figure who threatens to kill her young son and her sister unless she kills Henry.

Over the past couple years, the movie’s production company, Blumhouse Productions, have had more misses than hits at the box office. While they recently had a few decent performing hits, such as “Black Phone 2,” “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” and “M3GAN,” they also had quite a few movies that didn’t perform well (“M3GAN 2.0,” “Night Swim,” “Afraid,” and the list goes on). And, thankfully, this 2025 thriller, which has been on my radar for some time, did not disappoint.

The 2025 movie “Drop” is definitely a fun, tense and entertaining thriller. The movie also takes place primarily in a single location setting (a skyscraper restaurant) that can help give it a fairly claustrophobic feel, which also makes this thriller even more fun.

“Drop” also does a great job utilizing the use of modern technology, particularly AirDrop, which is a clever, modern way to keep the thriller interesting and fun. There’s also quite a few moments throughout the movie that are really tense and very suspenseful.

The suspense and anxiety-filled moments pretty much start as soon as the lead character (Violet) begins receiving anonymous, menacing messages and memes “airdropped.” “Drop” also does a fairly decent job keeping you guessing who is involved with these messages and who’s trying to attack her son and her son who’s watching him.

Even though this thriller can be fun and engaging most of the time, some of the plot can be a little convoluted at times and there are a few moments that can stretch believability just a bit. There’s also a couple times where the plot relies too heavily on convenience, yet it really shouldn’t affect you from enjoying this tense thriller.

“Drop” is an entertaining thriller that expertly blends modern tech anxiety with classic suspense, making it a worthwhile watch for anyone who enjoys tense thrillers, even if it does have a few small issues here and there.

  • Christopher Landon was hired to direct shortly after he left Scream 7 (2026).

  • The film was loosely inspired by an experience Smosh cast member Olivia Sui had in 2022, when she anonymously received a series of Shrek memes AirDropped to her phone while on a date with her boyfriend Sam Lerner. The two found it "creepy and bizarre" and thought it would make for a good movie premise, working with their friend and the film's producer Cameron Fuller to develop the idea.

  • Drop premiered at the South by Southwest Festival on March 9, 2025, and was released theatrically in the United States on April 11, 2025.
