In the Fall Film Festival selection “Oh, Hi,” Iris had met her perfect guy, Isaac, and are enjoying their first romantic getaway together - what could go wrong? Well, once it’s revealed that Isaac isn’t looking for a serious relationship - everything.
This clever and charmingly odd dark comedy takes on the highs and lows of modern dating and the ways it makes us all a little crazy.
“Oh, Hi” is an indie romantic comedy that can get a little weird and twisted, yet can still really entertain! This movie actually can serve as a sharp commentary on the ambiguities and communication failures in modern relationships. This indie film also does an entertaining job capturing the “mixed signals” and emotional distress that arise from differing expectations in a budding romance.
Off the bat during the film’s opening moments, we can see how the lead actors Logan Lerman and Molly Gordon have a strong, believable chemistry. Their numerous interactions together, including when they accidentally drive into a strawberry stand and when things start to go really wrong, feel spontaneous and natural.
Some of the scenes can seem a little on the unhinged side - mainly once Iris keeps Isaac chained to the bed. A bit of the unhinged moments can be on the fairy humorous side, which includes Iris showing him a little dance she performed for school years ago. A lot of her desperate actions to make him fall for her can be on the weird side, yet can really make you laugh.
Supporting actors John Reynolds and Geraldine Viswanathan really steal the show as Iris’ best friend and her best friend’s boyfriend. It’s also pretty hilarious when Iris and her friend actually make some sort of potion that could help with her situation, which is unconventional yet humorous.
Overall, “Oh, Hi” is a charming and funny watch, led by a great cast. Now, even though things can get on the chaotic side, that’s what makes this unconventional romantic comedy different and entertaining.
