‘Last Dance’ A Fun End Of ‘Venom’ Trilogy

Sony’s ‘Venom’ trilogy started in 2018 with the movie ‘Venom,’ followed by its 2021 sequel ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage.’ Despite initial mixed reactions from critics and fans alike, both ‘Venom’ movies ended up becoming decent hits and are the most successful movies in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (the universe that STILL doesn’t feature Spider-Man).

Now, the third and final entry of this trilogy is finally on the big screen!

In ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ Eddie Brock and Venom must make a devastating decision as they’re pursued by a mysterious military man and alien monsters from Venom’s home world.

Now, even though the ‘Venom’ movies aren’t really the best comic book movies out there, they can be rather entertaining. And, it’s just the same for ‘The Last Dance.’

The third and (so far) final entry delivers some great action-packed sequences and more humorous banter between Brock and Venom. This sequel does have a semi slow start, but it really picks up once the symbiote hunt begins.

‘Venom 3’ has a good amount of action scattered throughout that can be a little exhilarating at times. Some of the action starts with a tense few scenes where the military is after Eddie Brock/Venom after the events of the previous movie. Some alien monsters also get into the action, but I’ll get to that in just a second. 

The biggest action sequence occurs during the second half of the movie where the big action-packed conclusion takes place in Area 51. The entire action-packed conclusion is actually a little tense and visually great looking.

The third movie also builds more of Eddie and Venom’s relationship, especially once we learn about what could happen with the symbiotes. They also have more hilarious moments together and surprisingly a couple little emotional moments (won’t spoil why they’re emotional).

There is also a small sub-plot that involves Eddie Brock/Venom interacting with a family of hippies and alien enthusiasts that can also be hilarious at times, yet can feel a little out of place. Rhys Ifans, who plays the father of the family, Martin, does have a few funny bits. Quick side note: Ifans also portrayed Dr. Kurt Conners in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ in 2012.

‘The Last Dance’ also introduces us to the alien monsters called Xenophages, an alien species known for hunting symbiotes, who are sent by known ‘Venom’ comic book villain Knull. The filmmakers have stated that Knull will appear in other movies down the road, which is good since he’s only in a couple small scenes.

Overall, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is an entertaining conclusion of the ‘Venom’ trilogy. Just like the previous ‘Venom’ movies, there are a few flaws here and there, but if you liked the first two movies, then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one!

‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is written, produced and directed by Kelly Marcel, who has also written the previous ‘Venom’ movies, ‘Cruella,’ ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and ‘Saving Mr. Banks.’ This sequel also marks Marcel’s directorial debut.

A third ‘Venom’ movie was being developed after the release of 2021’s ‘Let There Be Carnage’ and was officially confirmed by Sony at CinemaCon in April 2022. The film’s villain, Knull, was introduced to the source material in 2018.

The next movie of the Sony Spider-Man Universe is ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ which is currently being released this December.  

‘Venom: The Last Dance’ is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, bloody images and strong language and has a running time of 109 minutes.

• Andy Serkis was interested in returning to direct following his involvement with Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), but was unable to do so due to his commitments to Animal Farm (2025) (which he had previously delayed in order to direct the former), so screenwriter Kelly Marcel took over as director for this movie. Nevertheless, Serkis would go on to provide the voice of the character Knull.

• During the final battle, a soldier named Thompson gets his legs chewed off by a Xenophage but otherwise survives. In the comics, Flash Thompson became the host of the Venom symbiote as Agent Venom after losing his legs in the Iraq War.

• The movie was originally planned to come out in October of 2024, but got bumped up to July 12th of that year. After the strike, it was pushed back to November before it finally got moved back to October 25th.

• Andy Serkis hinted that Knull will be featured in future Sony Marvel films.

• Sony Pictures confirmed the film was in development at CinemaCon in April 2022.

• The film features Knull, the King in Black of the symbiotes who was introduced to the source material in 2018. The filmmakers were always kept aware of the character, but decided they had to lay the foundations for Venom's character and his relationship with Eddie Brock before featuring the Marvel supervillain.

• Sony signed deals with Netflix and Disney in April 2021 for the rights to their 2022 to 2026 film slate, following the films' theatrical and home media windows.[49][50] Netflix signed for exclusive "pay 1 window" streaming rights, which is typically an 18-month window and included future Venom films following Venom: Let There Be Carnage.[49] Disney signed for "pay 2 window" rights for the films, which would be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu as well as broadcast on Disney's linear television networks.

• Ahead of the film's release in October 2024, Kelly Marcel said that while The Last Dance concludes with the story arc of Eddie Brock and Venom, it sets up the character Knull for future appearances within the SSU and is the beginning of the character's story.[34] While the film was intended as the conclusion of the Venom trilogy, Hardy expressed interest in reprising his role in the future and having his character crossover with Spider-Man, saying "never say never".
