“Mandalorian Season 3” A Decent Season Yet Still A Step Down From Previous Seasons

For the last couple review slates that I have been working on, I have been checking out the Disney Plus series “The Mandalorian” to gear up for the new movie “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Throughout the first two seasons, I have thoroughly enjoyed the series and it brought some fun back to the franchise for the most part. Now, let’s get into the third season of “The Mandalorian,” which could’ve been slightly better.
“The Mandalorian Season 3” follows Din Djarin and Grogu as they journey to Mandalore so Din can redeem his status as an outcast. Along the way, they team up with Bo-Katan Kryze to unite the scattered Mandalorian factions, culminating in a climactic battle to reclaim their destroyed homeworld from the remnants of Moff Gideon’s Imperial forces.
Like I stated before, I enjoyed the first two seasons and was really looking forward to the third season. And, even though a lot of the action is still really exciting and the expanded “Star Wars” lore that the production team came up with is great, the third season is a slight step down from the first two seasons.
Of course, before getting to a few of the things I was mixed about, Season 3 definitely did have some good things going for it. “The Mandalorian Season 3” explored more into the Mandalorian lore (which is actually pretty awesome), and also delivered some truly compelling character arcs for some of the supporting characters.
One of the most compelling moments of this season is seeing the disparate Mandalorian factions - the zealous Children of the Watch and the Nite Owls led by Bo-Katan Kryze - set aside their differences and focus on rebuilding their shattered society and reclaiming their homeworld.
Also, some longtime fans of the “Clone Wars” and “Rebels” shows might be thrilled to see the expansion of Kryze’s arc. The season detailed her royal lineage, her past rulership, and her very pivotal role in uniting the scattered tribes.
We also get to see some thrilling and emotional flashbacks to Grogu’s escape from the Jedi Temple during the pivotal moments of Order 66.

Speaking of Grogu, his emotional journey throughout the season as we see him being officially adopted as Din Djarin’s son and transforming him from a helpless ward into a protective courageous companion who actively does what he can to defend his father. There’s also times where we see how his powers have matured, such as when he uses his abilities to shield Din Djarin and Kryze from a blast of flames during the season 3 finale.
The third season features plenty of high-stakes action, ranging from massive space dogfights to intense, close up combat. The most thrilling sequences feature the climactic battle to retake Mandalore and the desperate finale as the heroes fight Imperial Guards and Moff Gideon. In the finale, the lead characters have their own action-packed moments against Moff Gideon, including a thrilling, anticipated battle between Gideon and Kryze.
Now, while the third season did have some decent moments, the season shifted its narrative focus from Din Djarin (which slowed things down) and some of the plot could be confusing. If you missed the spin-off, “The Book of Boba Fett” (like myself), you would miss the quick Din’Grogu reunion after their emotional season 2 separation. There’s also a few episodes that feel completely disjointed to the overall narrative, especially the episode that has cameos from Jack Black and Lizzo.
“The Mandalorian Season 3” met with a mixed but generally positive overall response. While critics and fans praised its stellar action sequences, cinematography, and world-building regarding Mandalore, many felt it suffered from uneven pacing and a wandering narrative compared to its tighter, more character-driven first two seasons.
I already have plans to check out some other shows available on streaming that are based on IP. I won’t reveal the next series I will be checking out but the only hint that I will give is that it’s a DC property. I will likely be checking out this series around July so make sure to keep on checking my Wyoming County Press Examiner reviews page on Facebook to see what it could be!
