The animation production company, Illumination, is, hands down, one of the best out there for family entertainment today. The company brought us those Minions that we all have grown to love over the years, Sing/Sing 2 and their latest film, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ among many others.
Now, Illumination has brought us another fairly entertaining movie for the whole family to see on the big screen with ‘Migration.’
A family of ducks decides to leave the safety of a New England pond for an adventurous trip to Jamaica.
However, their well-laid plans quickly go awry when they get lost and wind up in New York City.
Their experience soon inspires them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends, and accomplish more than they ever thought possible.
‘Migration’ is a highly entertaining animated movie that all families and the children will easily enjoy. The latest delightful family adventure from Illumination delivers a lot of moments that will have you laughing and the animation is just simply beautiful.
The story is really nice and one of the plot points which involves a father and son is a real nice touch. Throughout parts of the movie, the father wants his young son to listen and stay out of the way when there’s trouble. And, all the son wants to do is help. This small sub-plot wraps up quite nicely and is really heart-warming.
There are quite a few humorous moments scattered throughout, especially from the Uncle Dan character, voiced by the always entertaining Danny DeVito. During most of this movie, you can hear the little ones laughing and having a great time (which is nice).

The father character is very over-protective and is afraid to have his family finally migrate. This plot point also leads into a moral part of the story, which is to always try to take a chance in life and face your fears.
Overall, ‘Migration’ is a fantastic animated feature for the whole family to enjoy. The humor is great and the characters that we’re introduced to are memorable and the young ones will easily enjoy them.
The cast: Kumail Nanjani as Mack; Elizabeth Banks as Pam; Danny DeVito as Uncle Dan;
Caspar Jennings as Dax; Tresi Gazal as Gwen; Keegan-Michael Key as Delroy; Awkwafina as Chump; Isabela Merced as Kim; David Mitchell as GooGoo and Carol Kane as Erin.
‘Migration’ is written by Mike White (The One and Only Ivan; Pitch Perfect 3; The Emoji Movie; School of Rock) and directed by Benjamin Renner (Ernest & Clementine) and co-directed by Gyulo Homsy.
Illumination announced the ‘Migration’ animated feature in February 2022 and included a teaser trailer in front of this spring’s big hit ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ (which is now on Netflix if you liked that movie). This animated movie held its world premiere on October 19, 2023 as the grand summit matinee of the VIEW Conference expo in Turin, Italy. The VIEW Conference is a computer graphics event that’s held annually in Italy.
‘Migration’ is rated PG for action/peril and mild rude humor and has a running time of 83 minutes.
And coming up on the review front: ‘The Color Purple’ and my top picks of 2023.
