New Tom Hanks drama ‘Here’ a creative, unique drama

Thirty years ago, Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright teamed up to star in a little film called ‘Forrest Gump’ (ever heard of it? Just kidding!). The collaboration of them brought magic and emotion to the big screen and now let’s see if they do it again in the new release ‘Here.’
‘Here’ is an original film about multiple families and a special place they inhabit. The story travels through generations, capturing the most relatable of human experiences.
This story is told much in the style of the Richard McGuire graphic novel the film is based on (which I had to look it up since I never heard of it). ‘Here’ is a small tale of love, loss, laughter and life that most families would eventually go through.
The film mainly centers on the Young family, who have stayed in the same home for many generations. We follow the family through numerous ordeals, such as a young couple buying their first home, a son having his high school sweetheart meet his parents, a family member’s death, and many other relatable moments most of us go through.
Some of the other moments where we see other families during the film can be a little moving and intriguing at times. The stories aren’t interwoven at all and the only thing the stories have in common with each other is the house.
There are a few interesting scenes that show us what has happened in the house’s location in quite a few different eras, such as the Native American times, a visit from Benjamin Franklin and briefly into the prehistoric era. While watching the film, I also began to think of what has happened in the location of where we live and what stories it can tell.
Another thing to mention is the de-aging that is used for Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and a few other actors. The visual effects they used for the de-aging process were actually really good and the scenes featuring a younger Hanks and Wright are incredible since the filmmakers did a tremendous job giving the actors a youthful look when needed.
Overall, ‘Here can be a nice little watch that has emotion and a few laughs. Granted, it may drag a little bit here and there, but it’s a nice little drama for you to enjoy on the big screen!

‘Here’ is rated PG-13 for thematic material, some suggestive material, brief strong language and smoking and has a running time of 104 minutes.
Based on the comic book "Here" by Richard McGuire. It was first published as a strip in the comics magazine "Raw" in 1989, and was expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014.
This is the fifth collaboration between Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis, after Forrest Gump (1994), Cast Away (2000), The Polar Express (2004), and Pinocchio (2022).
The film adaptation of Here by Richard McGuire was announced in February 2022, with Playtone and ImageMovers producing, Eric Roth writing the script, Robert Zemeckis directing, and Tom Hanks set to star. To find investors, an auction for the movie's rights was to be brokered by CAA, which represents Hanks, Playtone and Roth, and WME, which represents Zemeckis and ImageMovers. However, all studios passed on the film at the package stage seeing how it was a risky and difficult movie for broad audiences.
The film uses a new generative artificial intelligence technology called Metaphysic Live to face-swap and de-age the actors in real time as they perform instead of using additional post-production processing methods.
