“No Other Land” was recorded between 2019 and 2023 and shows the destruction of a Palestinian community in the occupied West Bank, which had been resisting forced displacement after an Israeli “firing zone” was declared on their land.
Now, the controversial documentary is showing during the Dietrich Theater’s Spring Film Festival.
For half a decade, Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist, films his community of Masafar Yatta being destroyed by Israel’s occupation, as he builds an unlikely alliance with a journalist from the other side who joins his fight.
“No Other Land” is a powerful documentary that can be incredibly moving at times as it sheds light on the realities that have been unfolding in Israel and Palestine for many years. The filmmakers did an amazing job weaving together personal stories of resilience and the harsh realities of displacement, creating a deep, unforgettable experience.
The film’s raw story-telling and first hand footage brilliantly captures the human cost of injustice and resistance in a way that can feel both heartbreaking and inspiring.
One thing that makes this documentary stand out is its authenticity - the film is told through the eyes of Palestinian activists and journalists, and offers an intimate and personal perspective that some mainstream narratives sometimes overlook. There are also quite a few moments throughout this documentary that are really thought-provoking and a little gut-wrenching.
“No Other Land” is, most likely, one of the most controversial documentaries recently released. Some people have viewed the film as one-sided while others have praised it for its unflinching look at the ongoing conflict and its impact on Palestinian lives.

The film was selected for the Panorama section of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on February 16, 2024, winning the Panorama Audience Award for Best Documentary Film and the Berlinale Documentary Film Award.
“No Other Land” also won Best Documentary Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, which also garnered quite a bit of controversy. The film also struggled to find a US distributor for a domestic release.
The documentary is not rated and has a running time of 92 minutes. Make sure to check the Dietrich Theater’s website for the remaining show dates and times for “No Other Land.”
