The Saw franchise has been scaring horror audiences for nearly two decades. Over the years, the series had quite a few ups and downs. And, the series also had a couple attempts of giving the series a bit of a restart with Jigsaw and 2021's Spiral.

Now, the series is going back to basics with a prequel set between the first two movies. And this time, fans of the horror series should really enjoy this installment.

John Kramer is back and this chilling entry of the franchise explores the untold chapter of John Kramer/Jigsaw's most personal game.

Set between the events of Saw and Saw II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer - only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most valuable.

Armed with a newfound purpose, John returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral ways through a series of ingenious and terrifying traps.

Saw X definitely brings the franchise back to roots in a really successful way and is something that franchise fans should really enjoy. The latest entry of the series delivers the usual grisly moments the series is known for and surprisingly a bit of emotion.

After the last couple entries of the series didn't spark any life into the series, bringing it back to its roots actually works better than initially expected. This Saw prequel puts the main focus on the John Kramer/Jigsaw character, which is a first for the series.

Since the movie follows Kramer, you actually almost feel sympathetic for the character, despite him being the notorious killer Jigsaw. Some of the moments can be at a slower pace, especially when you see Kramer trying to find a cure for his cancer or to help fight it.

The slow pace actually helps the movie since it was the perfect pace to build up to the moments when Kramer finds the people who scammed him and puts them in one of his games, with a little help from fan favorite character Amanda Young. The pace really picks up once all the scammers are in their traps and the gruesome games begin.

Overall, if you enjoyed this horror franchise (at least the good entries), I think you'll enjoy this one. Saw X delivers some decent twists and turns along the way, some very memorable traps, and also has a small mid credit scene as well!!

A tenth installment of the horror series was reported to be in development in April 2021, one month before the spin-off movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw, opened. With a 79% critic ratings score on Rotten Tomatoes, Saw X marks the best critic reviews of the series since the first movie in 2004.
