“SpongeBob Squarepants” is a series of live-action/animated movies based on the popular Nickelodeon TV series of the same name. “The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie” was released in 2004 and two sequels followed: “Sponge Out of Water” in 2015 and “Sponge on the Run” in 2020 (this sequel skipped theaters due to it being, well, 2020).

After a couple spin-off movies for the Netflix streaming service, the series makes its theatrical return with “The SpongeBob Movie” Search for Squarepants.”

Hoping to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob follows a mysterious, swashbuckling ghost pirate known as the Flying Dutchman on a seafaring adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the ocean.

“SpongeBob: Search for Squarepants” is another adventure featuring everyone’s favorite SpongeBob characters that kids (and any other fans of the ongoing series) will surely enjoy. The latest big screen SpongeBob adventure delivers the classic SpongeBob zaniness that kids will really get into and some fairly humorous visual gags.

The movie’s animation style offers a fresh and colorful style that almost has an updated claymation feel to it. This movie’s adaptation is also fairly similar to the 2015 movie “Sponge on the Run.” The “claymation-adjacent” feel also helps with some of the movie’s creative visual gags and the wacky ocean chases that ensues.

The new adventure also has a deeper focus on the relationship between SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs with some uncharacteristically tender moments that actually adds some genuine heart to the story. There’s also the movie’s central message of self-acceptance - summarized by the theme “you are who you are” - which is a positive message lesson for children and a comforting reminder of some of the adults who may still be fans.

The latest big screen SpongeBob adventure also features quite a few memorable moments that really stand out, such as numerous amounts of meta humor, the Flying Dutchman’s underworld sequences (which is actually visually great) and a very

humorous “Lucky Brick” gag, where characters, when frightened, “poops a brick” as it comically appears behind them.

While the movie can feel a little formulaic at times, “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants” is still a great family movie to see with its fast-paced fun, colorful visuals and heartfelt themes for all to enjoy!
