In 2004, one of the most controversial religious films ever released made its debut - “The Passion of the Christ.” At the time of its initial release, the film received severely mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Some regarded the film a religious experience while others found it emotionally draining due to some of the graphic nature.

So, here is a quick look at the most controversial religious film ever released and let me know on my Wyoming County Press Examiner reviews page on Facebook your thoughts on the film!

In this version of Christ’s crucifixion, based on the New Testament, Judas expedites the downfall of Jesus by handing him over to the Roman Empire’s handpicked officials.

To the horror of his mother, Mary, Magdalen, whom he saved from damnation, and his disciples. Jesus is condemned to death.

He is tortured as he drags a crucifix to nearby Calvary, where he is nailed to the cross. He dies, but not before a last act of grace.

For quite a few years, I wanted to check out “The Passion of the Christ.” And, after finally getting a chance to see the film on streaming, I must say that, while there are some truly graphic moments, this religious film is truly powerful and is a film that should be seen at least once.

The performances in the film, especially from Jim Caviezel’s portrayal of Jesus, is tremendously moving. Caviezel can be really intense in some of his scenes and his acting is extremely top-notch in this film.

Now, while “The Passion of the Christ” can be a unique experience and truly moving, some of the film can be hard to watch. The hard to watch sequences come into play in the latter half of the film where we see Jesus Christ getting tortured and whipped, and during the crucifixion scenes (which can get quite graphic).

“The Passion of the Christ” can currently be streamed on Netflix and several other PVOD rental services.

Trivia: This is the highest-grossing foreign-language film or subtitle film in US box office history. It’s also the highest-grossing religious film at the worldwide box office.

A long-rumored sequel, potentially titled “The Resurrection of the Christ”, is currently in the middle of development, with Caviezel reprising his infamous role.

MPA: Rated R for sequences of graphic violence   (running time 127 minutes)
